Are Lot’s (pbuh) People the First Homosexuals According to the Qur’an?

By: admin

Question

Asalaamualaykum

Does the Quran and hadith mention that the people of Nabi Lut (AS) were the first people to practice homosexuality or sodomy? Doesn’t this contradict reason and historical research which indicate that these practices must have been on some scale since the beginning of man?

Answer

Wa Alaykumu Salam

And Lot (rhetorically) questioned his people: “Do you commit such an atrocity no one has indulged in before you in all of humanity? No doubt, you pursue men with [wanton] lust instead of [approaching] women. Certainly, you are a transgressing people. – Al `Araf 7:80-81

“Indeed, do you [allow yourselves to] accost men; cut off the paths and commit [the most heinous] evil in your gatherings?” Thus, the only thing his people would give as an answer was: “Bring upon us God’s punishment if you are of those who speak truth.” – Al `Ankaboot 29:29

The Qur’an does not say that the Prophet Lot’s (pbuh) nation was the first to commit homosexuality. It says that they indulged in the most heinous crimes ever. Prophet Lot, appalled at the circumstances, exclaims that no other civilization before them had committed such atrocities. This meant that they perpetrated a vast number of crimes of unparalleled degrees, which, from what we gather in understanding of the verses, included ambushing passersby and raping them. In Semitic cultures a guest, even a stranger, is to be treated with the utmost hospitality and respect. Instead, Lot’s community had driven themselves deeply into sin. They waited for people, usually men, to travel through their town and attack them. They would dehumanize them, steal all they had, rape them; it may have been even worse than that. The matter, as can be ascertained, is that this was not merely a homosexual attitude. Rather, it was a complete abomination standing in complete contrast to decency. In fact, the entire society was corrupt to the core – as an entirety and as individuals to their very inner selves.

From the verses of the Qur’an we can appreciate that the people of Lot were no ordinary people. They were a lunatic fringe of humanity that engaged in abominations and were condemned for it. Thus, it is not merely a matter of homosexuality but the cumulative vile behavior that they exhibited.

I hope this helps.

God knows best.
