Are We Forced to be Slaves of God?

By: admin

Question

Are we forced to be the slaves of Allah, if yes than why we are expected to love Allah when he made us slaves not friends?

Answer

God created us with free will so to say that we are forced into anything would be fallacious. The word “‘abd” denotes servitude and worship. Depending on the usage we may understand the correct meaning. In this regard “slave” would not be the most accurate description for our role with the Almighty. Rather, we are worshippers and servants of His will. Doing righteous deeds and believing in the Truth elevates our status to servants of God. Serving God is one of the most honorable positions one may attain. One should not confuse the negative connotations of servitude that people have come to understand. We can have a wonderful relationship with the Almighty if we stand firm in our beliefs and do as He wants, which is all good things. Remember that we have the choice of doing good or bad, slaves do not.

Having said the above please reflect on the following closely. Being slaves or servants of the Almighty should not be confused with being slaves of another being of our own kind. As is obvious no human can be as just and kind as the Almighty so serving God is far different from serving a human being. Since we are the creation of God, it is only the recognition of our relationship that we choose to be His slaves. This should be seen in the sense that we give our selves up to God unlike when a man enslaves another forcibly. You mention the point regarding friendship with the Lord but you should consider that itt would be a reward for the deserving souls that God puts them in the position of being His friends. However, if we demand friendship as a right, it would only be indicative of our failure or our refusal to see our own position with reference to the Almighty. If we truly recognize our position, we would love and be grateful to God for allowing us the cherished position of being humans and as a show of this love and gratefulness we give ourselves to be His slaves and servants. This in essence is what we seek first, it is the process of formulating this relationship that we submit ourselves in servitude.

I hope I have clarified the issue.

God knows best.
