Breaking a pledge

By: admin
Question
What is the punishment for someone who says “I swear to God I wont do this” and then the person does that action?

Reply

If a person has pledged with a serious intention, but still fails to uphold his pledge, then as an expiation of the sin involved in it, the Qur’an has prescribed that the person should:

  1. Feed ten hungry people. The food provided to the hungry should be of the same standard as that provided by the person for his own family and dependents; or
  2. Clothe ten poor people; or
  3. Free a slave. This option, as should be clear, was made a part of the Shari`ah, as a step toward the eradication of slavery. After the complete eradication of slavery, this option should, obviously, be considered as redundant; and, in case none of the above options can be offered as expiation, then
  4. Fast for three days.

I hope this helps.
