Is Alcohol Najas (i.e. Filthy) or Not?

Question

The use of perfumes containing Alcohol is allowed or not.

There are 2 views.

  1. alcohol is prohibited for drinking purpose only. So using perfumes containing alcohol is not prohibited, allowed to use.

  2. alcohol is najas. So perfumes containing najas is not allowed.

Answer

Our understanding is that the first view is correct. This can be ascertained from the Qur’anic injunction forbidding the believers from indulging in intoxicants:

O ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination,- of Satan’s handwork: eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper. – Al Ma’idah 5:90

The word “khamr” refers to intoxication but specifically to the consumption of wine. If one considers this point it cannot be extended to wearing perfumes with alcohol in them as they do not intoxicate nor are they a form of wine.
