Oneness of God

Question

There are a few questions that are really bothering me for which I haven’t found answers. How can we know that our concept of God is true? I mean how do we know (besides revelation that God is Omnipotent or omniscient)? If we cannot assume that our concept of God is true, then how can we prove that there is only one God? For example, without the concept of the omnipotence of God, we could rationally surmise that there could be a “council of gods” that rules the universe with mutual agreement.

If our concept of God were true, then why would a people consistently fall into polytheism which needed to be corrected by prophets.

Thank you.

Please read the our ebook: Frequently Asked Questions Regarding God

Had there been other deities then the Universe would be in utter chaos. As a matter of fact the scene would not be much different from Greek mythology where you have gods and goddesses that hate, fight, are jealous, back stabbing, etc…The very functionality of existence would be impaired. If there were a “council of gods,” would they agree on everything? Would they vote as to what action to take? If they agreed on everything then what would be the point of a council in the first place? As such if there are varying opinions whose word would overrule the other? The Qur’an itself has stated:

If there were therein gods beside Allah, then verily both (the heavens and the earth) had been disordered. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, from all that they ascribe (unto Him). – Al Anbiyah 21:23

As you can probably appreciate there are far too many complexities in the sharing of power and wisdom if your theory is pondered over.

The nature of man recognizes that God exists. This seems to be built into our very structure of being. However, because we also have free will and we desire to reach out to the Almighty we create substitutes. Sometimes this is done out of a lack of knowledge and sometimes it is because people misunderstand concepts regarding God and therefore create ones to help them understand. So, polytheism is the result of the natural instinct of knowing of God’s existence but creating and mixing ideologies regarding Him. Polytheism is the fabrication of the human mind, thus the prophets of God came to correct the people who had fallen into such beliefs.

I hope I have clarified the issue.

God knows best.
