Question:
Is it wrong or acceptable or recommended to read the Qur’an in another language when trying to gather its meaning? Is it sinful or sacrilegious? Must one only read it in Arabic?

Reply:
The Qur’an is a book of guidance for mankind, not for the Arabs only. If a non-Arab wants to know about the message of the Qur’an, he has no option but to read a translation of the Qur’an. I have absolutely no basis of saying that reading the translation of the Qur’an is sacrilegious or a sin.
In case anyone believes that reading the translation of the Qur’an is a sin, it is his duty to back his belief with some clear directives of the Qur’an or, at least, some narratives ascribed to the Prophet (pbuh). In the absence of such arguments, no one has the authority to declare something a sin or sacrilegious.
