Question
What is the position of keeping slave girls as your wives?
Reply
Islam was never in favor of the institution of slavery. It never promoted it. The institution of slavery, by the grace of God, no longer exists in the world. Therefore, the question regarding keeping slaves or slave girls does not arise anymore.
Islam accepted slavery as a social vice and gave directives for its gradual removal and ultimate extinction. Now after centuries, the world is ultimately freed of this social evil. Islam made its contributions to free the world of it. I would, therefore, say that under the present circumstances it is completely prohibited and against the teachings of Islam to take any action that may, directly or indirectly, once again seek to lay the foundations of or to promote this institution.
I would also like to clarify a misconception that may exist in the minds of some people, as is also apparent from your question: Slave girls were not given the status of a wife. They were considered a property of their masters. Their masters could use them in any way that they wanted. Marriage with slave girls was considered to be against the nobility and status of the free men. Slaves, in the pre-Islamic Arabia (and other parts of the world) were considered to be commodities, not human beings.
