Studying in Co-Education Institutions

By: admin

Question:

Can a girl study in a co-ed institution?

Reply:

The Qur’an has given directives to men and women regarding the etiquette, which should be observed if there is an intermingling of the sexes. These directives concern men as well as women. In view of this fact, it is, indeed, preferable to have separate educational institutions for men and women. It must be clearly understood that such preference is not a directive of the Shari`ah. The Shari`ah only tells us that if men and women are to interact with each other, such and such etiquette must be observed. Following this etiquette may become a hindrance in the free and frank atmosphere of an educational institution. Therefore, if it is possible, an Islamic society should try to have separate institutions for its male and female students.

It is, therefore preferable for a person, who wants to live his life according to the tenets of the Shari`ah, to try and find a non-co-ed institution. But if he/she does not find one, all that Islam wants from him/her is that he/she must observe the etiquette prescribed by the Shari`ah in this respect. Forgoing education because one cannot find a non-co-ed institution is neither a wise decision nor a demand of the Shari`ah.
